She attended University of California Los Angeles to earn degrees in English in addition to African American Studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in broadcast journalism as a student. Her career began working as an assistant at CBS News in the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay was able to recall being assigned an assignment to watch the house and examining the waste belonging to one of the juries. Following her disappointment with journalistic work by the assignments she was given, DuVernay decided to pursue a career in publicity. DuVernay began working in a small studio as a Junior Publicist right after college. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999.
